I started playing bass for Robert Harrison’s Future Clouds & Radar in 2007 after the release of the band’s eponymous debut album. In 2008 the band started working on another record at Robert’s home studio in Travis Heights. Robert asked me to play bass on most of the record, which was later mostly mixed by Dave Fridmann. My favorite song that I got to contribute bass to is “Old Edmund Ruffin.” I played my ’73 Fender Precision bass with Thomastik-Infeld (JF344) flatwound strings. I think we recorded the song direct with no amp. Not only is “Old Edmund Ruffin” a great song with a phenomenal guitar solo by Robert at the end, but the tune’s title also plays in to my passion for American Civil War history. Know the reference?
